COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This generative workshop honors Open Books: A Poem Emporium’s new location in the Good Arts building, combining a series of mindfulness exercises with ekphrastic writing prompts. Come get grounded and engage meaningfully with visual art, through poetry!

Traditionally, ekphrastic poems incorporate a vivid description of a work of art. Through the imaginative act of narrating or reflecting on the “action” of a painting, photograph, or sculpture, poets can amplify and expand meaning.

Naa Akua is leading three of these Mindful Ekphrastic Poetry Workshops, on three Saturdays: May 21, May 28, and June 11. Each class will approach the intersection of mindfulness and ekphrasis from a slightly new angle, utilizing different artwork and prompts, so feel free to register for multiple sessions!

Artwork, as well as sample ekphrastic poems, will be provided by the instructor in class, so all you need to bring is your writing materials.
